This Weekend in Detroit

“Life will break you. Nobody can protect you from that, and being alone won’t either, for solitude will also break you with its yearning. You have to love. You have to feel. It is the reason you are here on earth. You have to risk your heart. You are here to be swallowed up. And when it happens that you are broken, or betrayed, or left, or hurt, or death brushes too near, let yourself sit by an apple tree and listen to the apples falling all around you in heaps, wasting their sweetness. Tell yourself that you tasted as many as you could.”

Louise Erdrich, “The Painted Drum”

Slowly getting back to civilization and hoping to support several shows this weekend. It’s a wonderful kind of crazy when there’s a surge of amazing talent coming together and sharing their light with the world. Here’s what I recommend checking out:

Dylan’s Hand Recovery Hootenanny – all day music fundraiser for Dylan Dunbar, who is quite possibly the best guitarist this side of the Mississippi

“A Jukebox for the Algonquin” a play written by Paul Stroli & directed by Barbara Bruno & featuring an incredibly talented group of folks who have touched my heart and soul as partners in artistic delight over the past 15 years

“The Man Beast” – a play written by Joseph Zettelmaier, directed by Julia Garlotte, & performed by two of the finest local performers I’ve ever witnessed

“Grand Concourse” – a play written by Heidi Schreck & directed by Kez Settle, one of my absolute favorite directors in Detroit. Wonderful performers in this cast as well.

If the creek don’t rise, maybe I’ll see you there.
