Remember September

Shout out to all those friends and relatives who appreciate these monthly updates on surrounding myself with beautiful things (here’s to you, Dad – I miss you). A little late, but here’s the highlight reel from last month.

My 5th and final theatre project of 2024 – Rosedale Community Players’ One Act Festival. This shot was taken after the set was struck, and I was closing up for the last time. Keys turned in and I’m officially on a much-needed theatre hiatus. I won’t be bored though – taking one class every 8 weeks until next spring, towards a paralegal certification.
3rd row center for a night with Nate Jackson & special guests in Grand Rapids, MI — chalk full of ridiculously skilled improvised comedy. An eight year-old kid a couple rows behind me absolutely stole the show — and Nate Jackson’s attention, which saved me from getting picked on. So to that kid, wherever you are: Thanks, man. I owe you one.
A new professional theatre company recently opened just down the road, and they are consistently doing excellent work. It’s also a great excuse to see two of my favorite women in the theatre community. They had the cute idea of having everyone write down the best book we’ve read this year on a lapel sticker — in my excitement to share my recent discovery of Amor Towles, I was so focused on spelling his name right that I got the name of the book utterly and completely WRONG. For the record, it’s “Rules of Civility”, and it’s incredible.
Stealing a page out of my dear dad’s playbook, my role as parent / basic needs provider to my firstborn has passed, and has morphed into parent / theatre experience provider. We adored Flint’s version of “Spring Awakening” and simply had to see them attempt “Godspell” using an actual swimming pool for the central scenic design. Points for bold choices, and while the element of water took away from some important elements (like body mics), it was a fascinating take on a very old story and sitting in the splash zone was icing on the cake — or rather, water on my shoes.

All photos still being taken on my Pixel 6 Pro. It’s served me well.
