Along Comes Mary

“Mary Magdalene in Ecstasy” by Artemisia Gentileschi (1620-25) @ By Her Hand

Can’t we look to Mary Magdalene as simply an early church leader whose rightful place next to Christ should have been acknowledged? There are no Scriptures to place her anywhere but right next to Jesus. Even a cursory reading of the Bible shows her to be a godly woman responding wholeheartedly to a message that must have appealed to her greatly. But the fastest way to rob a woman of her power is to make her a sexual suspect. It certainly has worked all these years for MM.

Forget the 5th Beatle – it doesn’t hold a candle to the debate about the 13th apostle.

Oops, I think my feminism is showing.

Whatever side you may choose to take in this — and I appreciate that when it comes to the events in the life of Jesus of Nazareth, it is likely that most of my readership does, in fact, take a side — I hope we can all agree that this depiction of Mary M, a “sinner saint”, makes a profound impression — especially knowing that this piece emerged during an artistic era of more Holy Trinities and bloody crucifixions than you can shake a fleur-de-lis at.

Speaking for myself, anyway, I think she’s absolutely breathtaking.
