I’ll admit, I had a printed tapestry of this piece hanging on a wall in my first apartment with my then-husband, about twenty years ago — but it was only very recently that I noticed the boats.
Not so for Van Gogh – according to the exhibition we visited in Columbus, it was those same sea vessels being caught in the monstrous wave (that is presented less like water and more like claws, ready to shred the sailors to pieces) that drew him in, that made him “feel it”.
What a wonderful way to describe great art. Feeling it.

I have always loved this style of art. I couldn’t tell you the why of it all, but I don’t suppose that matters much.

Well said. Sometimes the intellect just needs to get out of the way already.
