“Why shouldn’t I be proud to be a woman? My father, that enthusiastic apostle of humanity, told me again and again that it was woman’s mission to improve the human race…To his doctrines I owe my great and glorious ambition for the sex to which I proudly belong, whose independence I’ll defend till my dying day. Besides, I’m convinced the future is ours.”
Rosa Bonheur
I normally wouldn’t take (and even less so would I post) a photo of a plaque from a museum. It’s so much more fun to look at the art and make up your own mind.
An exception must be made, however, when there is a compelling story revealed in the person behind the art. When their circumstances touch you in a certain way, and make you want to see more from, and learn more about, the person who created it.
Rosa Bonheur, thank you for making me reassess everything I thought I knew about women vs. the art world in the late 19th century. (And cheers to the Philadelphia Museum of Art, for what has to be a deliberate mission to display at least one female or nonbinary artist in nearly every gallery room we visited.)
