“Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.”
Edgar Degas
I had to check the artist plaques twice to make sure I read them correctly. Yes, this is Degas, the same guy who had an obsession for painting ballerinas in various poses that pains me to think about the models who had to stand like that for hours while he tried to capture, well, whatever it was he was trying to capture. Certainly not the personalities of the ballerinas.
And yet, in his sculpture of Marie Genevieve van Goethem, he appears to be doing just that.
Then in the interior painting, dark colored and dark themed (read the title – it’s fraking dark) there’s not a single dancer in sight. Or is there?
I’m not sure which of these two had a bigger effect on me, or that either one had to “win” that particular race. This was Degas not being Degas, and I love them for it.
